oin us for a program featuring Charles J. Stick, the Virginia-based landscape architect renowned for his historically and culturally grounded gardens filled with luxuriant blooms.
A fascinating new monograph, Charles J. Stick and His Gardens, written by Jeff Poole, shines a spotlight on Stick’s beautiful designs. Focusing on residential gardens, Stick draws on the principles of Palladio, Charles A. Platt, and Russell Page to connect architecture to land, creating enticing pathways between formal planting and the surrounding landscape.
Organized into two main sections, the book first highlights four landscapes that Stick has designed and nurtured over decades of close collaboration with their owners: Crab Tree Farm (since the mid-1980s) in Lake Bluff; Mount Sharon near Charlottesville, Virginia; Sleepy Cat Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut; and Waverley in Virginia. Each is examined in depth from personal, philosophical, and design perspectives, revealing flourishing, historically grounded landscapes and offering new insights into Stick’s creative process, as well as the intimacy of his client relationships.
The second section features ten additional gardens—including others in Lake Forest and Winnetka, as well as sites across the country—that demonstrate Stick’s ability to adapt his signature style to varied geographies.
Mr. Stick’s new book will be available for purchase and signing.
This event was made possible by the generosity of Crab Tree Farm.
