The Lake Forest Preservation Foundation, in partnership with the History Center of Lake Forest & Lake Bluff, presented Tradition Meets Modernity: Chicago-Area Interiors of Frances Adler Elkins—an illuminating program featuring author Scott Powell.
Drawing from his extensive research and his book Interiors of Frances Adler Elkins, Powell explored the work of Frances Elkins, the pioneering interior designer who seamlessly blended classical tradition with modern sensibility. Sister of architect David Adler, Elkins collaborated on many of the most important houses in Lake Forest and Chicago’s North Shore, shaping interiors that were elegant, comfortable, and quietly innovative.
Through rare photographs, personal archives, and vivid storytelling, the program highlighted Elkins’ influence on twentieth-century design—revealing how her interiors balanced beauty, restraint, and modern living while continuing to inspire designers today.
