Lake Forest List of Ten Endangered Sites and Structures
Some of Our Successes:
Downtown Train Station Renovation (1978-1986) Lake Forest Train Station Sketch Toward the end of the 1970s, the historically significant 1899 Frost and Granger railroad station in downtown Lake Forest was in such a state of disrepair that the RTA (now known as METRA) proposed to replace it with a more utilitarian structure. As its first major project, the Foundation, working with the City and the RTA, raised over $400,000 to renovate the building. In addition to selling tickets and sheltering passengers from the elements, the station is now home to the Chamber of Commerce, a bank, a barber, a shoe repair, a newstand and a cleaners. The Foundation continues its stewardship of the station with repeated platform plantings and annual holiday decorations. [Pen & ink drawing by Alice Moulton-Ely]
Walden-Bluff's Edge Bridge (1996-1998)
Bridge Watercolor By 1995, the Walden-Bluff's Edge Bridge had deteriorated so much that the City budgeted $201,000 for its demolition. The Foundation campaigned to save the bridge and raised over $125,000, which, together with the funds the City had set aside for demolition, was used to restore the bridge instead. It reopened in January 1998 and was rededicated on August 16, 1998. [Watercolor by Mark McMahon]
